The Razor-and-Blades Business Model

There's a name for this in economics: the razor-and-blades model. Sell the durable item at cost, or even at a loss, and make the actual margin on a proprietary consumable the customer has to keep buying. It's not a conspiracy, just a pricing strategy old enough that most people stopped noticing it.

It only works because of one mechanical fact: the cartridge fits nothing except the handle it was built for. Buy into a particular cartridge system and you're stuck paying whatever that brand charges for refills, because no other manufacturer makes a compatible one. There's no competing shop to walk into.

A safety razor blade doesn't have that problem. The subsidy on the cartridge handle isn't generosity, it's math the manufacturer already did for you. A safety razor doesn't carry that same subsidy, because there's no lock-in downstream to fund it. The third is that the expensive part of a safety razor only gets bought once. There's no new handle coming out next year that makes the old one obsolete, no quiet redesign that changes the refill shape. It's a single purchase that keeps working.

No. Inkjet printers and ink cartridges run on it, so do game consoles and games, and coffee machines with proprietary pods. Shaving just happens to be the clearest, longest-running example.
Are cheaper cartridge razors (disposables, drugstore brands) a better deal?
